E3: Miyamoto announces Pikmin 3 - sort of

The E3 Nintendo Developer Roundtable ended some hours ago, and it did not only feature more insight into Nintendo's lead titles, but also an announcement that was really somewhat between the lines. Which doesn't make it less exciting. Read on for the details.

The roundtable began with a gameplay session of Animal Crossing: Wild World, which basically looks exactly like the old version for Gamecube and has the old look and feel of the series. But there will be some new events taking place in the game world, like Carnival for example. Your city will be a shared place that friends can visit, even when you yourself are not currently there. The game once again heavily relies on you being creative as a user. You can edit your shirts, furniture and other stuff in many ways.

Next on was Wii Sports Resort, which was proof for the new accuracy of the Wii MotionPlus gadget, that easily delivers a much more efficient motion sensor than the current Wiimote on its own. Concerning multiplayer, you won't necessarily need to buy a Wii MotionPlus for every player, because in some games you will be able to just pass it on to your friends (we already know that from the original WiiSports and its bowling mini-game). We also learned that the new waterskiing mini-game is being developed by developers of Wave Race 64.

Miyamoto then came on stage to make some noise with Wii Music which, as he fully acknowledges, feels much more like a musical toy than like an actual game. But in his opinion, this is exactly what makes it so interesting. The game will contain 50 songs, including licensed music, but Nintendo are not really thinking about downloadable content (surprise, surprise!). They will focus on sharing music videos over WiiConnect24 instead.

Near the end, during the final Q&A session, Miyamoto was then asked if a new Pikmin game was in development. And Miyamoto's response was translated with the words: "We're making Pikmin." That's it. If the term understatement was ever appropriate, then we would use it for this exact situation. Pikmin 3 (or however it might be titled) is, after all, one of Nintendo's biggest exclusives core gamers are waiting for. Miyamoto did not say anything else on this matter. But at least we now know that it is out there, somewhere.

Then the Nintendo Developer Roundtable ended. It leaves us, once again, waiting for more.

If I was ever unsure if I still belong to the Nintendo Core Gamers, now I have an answer, I've never heard the term "pikmin" in my life :-)

Well, that just gets me closer and closer to write a review about "Pikmin" for the Gamecube, which I only didn't write up to now because I am lacking good screenshots of the game. It' fabulous, it's great, it's fun: and it was pretty much copied by Overlord for the PC. ;)

What if it was a misunderstanding, like Myamoto said "We aren't making pikmin", and his translator misunderstood? I would be so mad... I'd... I'd... I don't know what I'd do... But I'd be mad none the less. >:(
