E3: 80GB PS3 Launching in Europe on August 27 for 399 Euro

Germany —

During the EA Press Conference at this year's E3 in Los Angeles, Sony's Jack Tretton did not only announce some new games, but also a new 80GB model of the PS3, heading to replace the 40 GB model in the long term.

One day later, we know the exact release date for this model in Europe. In the (short) official part of a very relaxed, poolside cocktail party for European press in the Viceroy Hotel at Santa Monica beach, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's president David Reeves (pictured above during the announcement) said that the model will be simultaneously launched in the whole of Europe on August 27. Some territories might have to wait a couple of days longer, Russia will have to wait until mid of September.

The new PS3 model has the exact same features as the 40GB model, the only difference will be that you can store twice as much stuff on it -- which gets more and more important, given the increase of downloadable content like HD movies, demos or large game installations.

David Reeves also said that

The 40GB model will be replaced by 80GB. Don't ask if we’re going to go down in price on 40GB – the answer is no. Kaz Hirai [the worldwide president of Sony Computer Entertainment] has planned this for a long time. There are already very few 40GB models left - especially in the UK. We predict we'll be nearly out of stock by the time we launch.

We can expect the price of the new PS3 to be set around €399 or £299 -- a German PR representative mentioned 395 Euro. Reeves also said that there will be various bundles (PS3 plus a game) from September to November 2008, but that they will differ from the US bundles and will be also tailored to the needs of the various European countries.

Reeves went on to announce various new games for the PS3 and PSP, with one nice stumbling: He called the upcoming Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty (which, in Europe, will be not only released as downloadable content via PlayStation Network, but also as a physical game) "Request for Booty".

Impressive, I'm just back from the cocktail party were David Reeves held his little speech 2 hours ago (I'm adding a picture...), and you've already got it from other sources :-) He also said that the one major thing of Sony Computer Entertainment America's announcement that won't make it to Europe this year is the video download content. This, Reeves said, will skip into 2009, with further details beeing announced later this year.
