E3: Nintendo announces Wii Music, Wii Sports 2 & GTA DS

In their press conference at the Kodak theatre in Hollywood, which was completed minutes ago, Nintendo announced nothing spectacular new, but still some nice surprises:

  1. Wii Music
  2. Wii Sports Resort (incl. 1 WiiMotion Plus)
  3. GTA Chinatown Wars for DS

Wii Music was introduced at the very end of the press conference, a drummer used the Wii BalanceBoard for the drum pedals and the WiiMode for seven different drums. Then, Shigeru Miyamoto joined him on stage and "played the saxophone" using the WiiRemote. Then, he announced the new game, saying that over 50 different instruments will be playable by just moving your body, e.g. the Violin, Piano or Saxophone. The Guitar is played like posing in "air guitar mode". So it's rather about the looks than the actual playing, Wii Music is. It will record videos of your Mii's performances, Miyamoto said. The press conference ended with a band of Nintendo executives (up to 4 players simantanously can form a band).

Wii Sports Resort makes use of the newly announced WiiMotion Plus, which is a little box you insert into the end of the WiiRemote (where the Nunchuck goes normally). With this, the WiiRemote finally gets more precise and presumably can notice the turning of the wrist, and "knows" for the first time where your hand is in relation to the TV Screen. Wii Sports Resort is a series of fun sport games you may or may not like playing at the beach. Three examples were given: Throwing a discus which a puppy tries to catch in the air (like in Nintendogs, but in 3D), a sword fight (wooden swords, of course) with seemingly working cuts from different angles and blocking, and a Water-Powercruiser minigame.

GTA Chinatown Wars was only announced and the packshot was shown, there was no demonstration. The game will be set in a modern Liberty City and will (surprise!) feature the same open-world approach than the big versions.

There were other new titles mentioned, too:

  1. Pokemon Rangers Shadows of Almia (DS)
  2. Animal Crossing City Folk (Wii) incl. new WiiSpeak option
  3. Guitar Hero On Tour Decades (DS), which can share songs with the first version

Of course, there were the usual good news regarding Nintendo products, here are some excerpts: In May, lifetime sales in the US surpassed 10 mio. Wiis, and 20 mio. DS handhelds. It was stressed that finally, 3rd party publishers are successful on the Wii, too: 19 games from 11 publishers have surpased the 400.000 sold copies mark in the US. Handhelds now comprise 35% of all game software sales, and 48% of DS customers are female. Then the Nintendo executives went on trying to paint a bright future for the DS as a "natural companion for everyone", mentioning using it while travelling for airport or restaurant information (sounds like there will be a GPS addon announced somewhen in the future, like Sony's GoExplore). It was not a hit press conference, and we noticed how mild the applause was throughout the show. But still, Nintendo has good stuff to come, so we should be satisfied.
