E3: (no longer Live) from the EA press conferenceE3: (no longer Live) from the EA press conference
Last updated on July 15, 2008 - 18:23.
Provided the wireless LAN will not leave us (like at this mornings' Microsoft press conference, which you can read about in this news special), we'll sort of live-cover EA's press conference, which will start in about 10 minutes (3pm local time, 24:00 in Germany, 11pm in the UK). We'll do that via the comments, so be sure to reload every minute or so. Have fun!

3:09: John Riccitello is on stage, nine minutes late. Says they want to take another approach than Microsoft this morning: just the developers talking about their games.
3:10: Rod Humble of EA Sims comes onto the stage. Short trailer of Sims Animals is shown. Very cute, very easy to play (EA says). Bears that meet and give themselves a "special hug" and create a baby. Coming in early 2009.
3:14: The Sims Store: Allows players to download content directly to their game.
3:15: Sims 3: "The most complex characters every created for a computer game". Talking about seamless world, which feels like real life. Trailer showing the gameplay of Sims 3 for the first time (we'll add an EA special later which will have screenshots!)
3:17: Glen Schofield of EA Redwood Shores is on stage, talking about Dead Space.
3:18: „Core gameplay mechanic is strategic dismemberment, you have to tear opponents apart limb by limb“
3:20 Dead Space liveplay going on. Hero is encountering big opponent that throws him back several metres. Hero keeps cutting on the legs and arms of the monster. Life force is depleting, but then the monster is cut down. Very bloody, "mature" scenes...
3:23: Still Dead Space live gameplay. Hero encounters huge arm or tentacle drawing him into a black hole, gameplay over. October 21st is the release date, we are told, and a gameplay trailer ends the Dead Space presentation, beginning with very eery music ("Twinkle, twinkle, little star" sung by a cold female computer voice).
I'm looking forward to this. The newest trailer I saw really was quite intense. And as long as the cold female computer voice along with the story doesn't try to copy Shodan too much, Dead Space could in my opinion really turn into a very promising game for mature audiences.
3:25: Patrick Soderlund, EA Games European Studios (Battlefield Bad Company) shows Mirror’s Edge.
3:27: Gameplay demonstration of Faith's (the heroness') way through a level. You constantly see Faith's hands or feet, Patrick calls this "Runner's vision". When she's injured, the picture turns reddish. Very intense action although there's no fighting in the presentation (yet). Early puzzle: How does Faith reach the opposite side of a hall? By jumping on boxes, using an air shaft. Now there are four opponents, shooting. Faith runs...
3:29: "Reaction time" slows down everything, is used for difficult stunts. Faith is on the roof, is being shot at. But, Patrick says, "you can solve the game without firing a single shot yourself" (gives you an archievement on Xbox Live).
No need for fighting= I like that a lot, I wasn't sure abour Mirrors Edge, but I think I will buy it.
3:30: Faith jumped at a helicopter which was attacking her on the roof top, is now hanging from it. (objects you can interact with or jump at etc. are usually red to help players notice them). Now, Liveplay ends, trailer starts. Mirror's Edge presentation ends.
3:31: Loud applause in the audience for Mirror's Edge. Now, Will Wright himself enters... talking about Spore.
Applause for Mirror's Edge: EA got a true winner there (and not another cash-cowed and ruminated hit).
3:33: "I want the gameplay to represent the combination of science and creativity", Wright says. "Part of our plans for Spore was to first launch the Creature Editor", he goes on. According to NPD charts, it was number 1 in sales in late June. "We hoped to have a big database of creatures before Spore itself was released. Now, we hoped to have 100.000 creatures uploaded within the two months until the release of Spore. But we hit that number after 24 hours, and now, after 18 days, we have more than 2 millions and that is more than the number of real species of Earth." Spore = 38% god, a slide of Wright says.
3:38: Wright shows creatures made by players, including human like creatures which he says "we didn't know were possible with the creature editor". Says there have been more than 85000 YouTube videos created with the Spore Creature Editor already. And there's a "Sporelebrity Gallery", Wright says -- movie director David Lynch apparently has designed a creature called Freedom One (a green, bipedal dinosaur).
3:40: Talks about collaboration with SETI institue. Wright goes on: "We'll always be measured against The Sims." Wright cites Escapist and The Times that wrote favourably about Spore, then says "Thank you very much", and a Spore trailer is shown.
3:43: Very funny Spore trailer, at the end September 7th is shown as the release date for Spore. Peter Moore of EA Sports enters, is greeted by a attendee's scream: "Show us your new tatoo!". Moore says: "This year will be a landmark year for EA Sports", cites 20th anniversary of Madden, cites NBA Live. 2 times NBA basketball champion Bill Walton enters stage. He's like two times the size of Peter Moore...
3:44: Moore moved away from white-haired Bill Walton on the stage so he doesn't look so small.
3:47: Still talking about NBA Live 09. "You can't script sports", the ex champion says, and Peter Moore takes the cue: "NBA Live 09 will feature 'Dynamic DNA'". That apparantly means that the game feeds on real-live data which is included to make the actual behaviour of the players as lifelike as possible. There will be daily updates with the newest statistics from the real NBA season.
3:50: Player tendencies is part of Dynamic DNA: How will a player react in certain situations. Shows example of a player who drives left across the field -- which seems to be typical for him (you'll have noticed by now that we know nothing about Basketball). There's also Team DNA, again based on real-world data, updated daily. "Based on last night's game, not on last year's".
3:52: Not knowing anything about the NBA, we can only realize how extremely lifelike the graphics look, it's very close to seeing an actual live feed on TV. Moore talks a lot about the dynamic DNA which we apparently see right now. Well, he will be right, we guess... Huge applause in the audience, Moore says Celtics will be champs of the season, booing and applause in the audience...
3:56: Moore still on stage, talks about EA Sports' All-Play series for Wii. Professional golfer Natalie from Las Vegas demonstrating All-Play Golf with a WiiMote instead of a real club. Moore gets the firs shot, does quite well. Now Natalie hits...
3:58: Natalie did much worse than Moore, but is now closer to the flag than Moore with his first shot. Moore tries to put in, sinks it in the hole, is very happy...
4:00: Natalie misses the hole, and sinks the ball with her fourth try (Bogey). Good demonstration that the Wii Remote does not feel like a real golf club...
4:02 John Pleasants from Redwood Shores talks about making games more intuitive and connected. “We need to give gamers more control”. Introduces Nanea Reeves from EA Online Group, who talks about “Nucleus” which “carries your online identity everywhere you go, even across platforms”.
4:05: Nanea Reeves goes on to talk about micro transactions. Says that Nucleus is part of all EA sports titles and Spore, wants to have it included in more than 25 titles by the end of 2009. Her colleague talks about “Social Achievements” that can be unlocked. Players can set up their own achievement tests for their friends. That achievement system is called “Rupture”.
4:08: Travis Boatman of EA Mobile enters the stage. Talks about the iPhone family (iPhone, iPod touch, iPhone 3G). Talks about Spore for iPhone, which takes advantage of the accelerometer of the iPhone that lets you move your cell-creature by tilting the iPhone (if we have got it right).
4:11: Greg Zeschuk from Bioware on stage!
4:13: "Dragon Age is the spiritual successor of the great Baldur's Gate. Dragon Age will be the foundation of a new big franchise on PC and the consoles". Trailer is being shown.
4:13: Trailer is a little longer than the one which could be downloaded since last Saturday. King cries "Hounds", hounds attack, then the armies run at each other, than he cries "Archers" (like in the trailer on gametrailers.com). But then, this trailer is also over.
4:14: Gabe Newell from Valve on stage. Talks about Left 4 Dead, the first person horror game. Mentions "dynamic shared narrative". The gane supports split screen, has new matchmaking system. "We try to combine the narrative of Half-Life with the social replayability of Counterstrike and Team Fortress 2".
I found a trailer with these "hounds" on gametrailers.com as well, wondered if it was worth an update of the news, but it was the same trailer with hounds instead of archers.
"THe plan will work, your majesty" "of course it will" :)
Gabe Newell continues: “Big chunk of Artifical Intelligence that decides on music cues, lighting cues, difficulty levels. AI is context sensitive, changes the audio environment and so on.”. Gabe Newell gives an example for that: One group has not played very well, has been beaten up, has been shooting at itself. “This group needs an easy encounter”, Gabe says. Short video shows four players shooting at only on opponent at a gas station. Now Gabe talks about a second group, which has been playing very well. Similar scene in the video, but now a dozen zombies come up against that second group.
4:18: Newell says the game will be shipping on November 4th for PC and Xbox 360. Then a very loud trailer starts... Group of soldiers fights against Zombies, a big one throws big chunk of stone or asphalt on us. Big applause.
4:20: EA boss John Riccitiello back on stage. Talks about EA partners, mentions Crytek and other partners. Announces new partner: id Software, and now John Carmack enters stage to a huge applause.
4:21: John Carmack tells about how they can now use "EA's muscles" without losing their control on their games. Talks about their new game, Rage (their racing-fighting-Mad-max-kind of game), which is "a new vision for id Software". Tells us that id will show more on QuakeCon, but shows a very short teaser video, which still is greeted with tremendous applause.
4:25: John Riccitiello quickly mentions other franchises like World in Flames, Warhammer Online and various others, then says goodbye. Exit trailer shows various EA titles, press conference is over. Thanks for watching (reloading)... :-)
Thanks for blogging. Was there a game presentation that you liked best?
I think Mirror's Edge :-) Very unique feeling (from watching it), although I am not sure if I'll like it as a game. I prefer shooting to running and dodging...
I'll go for "Dead Space" then. The main reason for this is that I expect it to have an intense atmosphere and storyline.
Dead Space is a very close second to me. The trailer I mentioned in the "live feed" was very, very eerie. And have I mentioned, very, very bloody? Twinkle, twinkle, Little Star...
I think running off from massively armed, trigger-happy guards is better than attempting to shoot 'em: I'll stand by Mirror's Edge :D.
Only sitting next to you could have been better, thanks for that!
