Warhammer Online: Major features cut

Mark Jacobs, Mythic Entertainment VP and General Manager, just confirmed in an interview that some major features will be cut from the upcoming MMO Warhammer Online to make sure that it can really be released this fall. And one thing is for sure: We are definitely talking about really major features here. Read on.

One of those changes is that the capital cities of the factions Dark Elves, High Elves, Orcs and Dwarves will not be in the game. Yes, you did your maths completely right: four cities less than expected. We don't know how this will affect the highly-awaited RvR (Realm vs. Realm) aspect of the game, in which you were supposed to be able to conquer the cities of your enemies.

Four classes will also be cut away. Those classes will be the Choppa (Greenskin), the Hammerer (Dwarf), the Blackguard (Dark Elf) and the Knight of the Blazing Sun (Empire).

This leaves the Empire and Dark Elf races without a dedicated tanking career, possibly limiting their contributions to end-game PvE content. Jacobs moved immediately to try to curtail the obvious rumor-mongering: "This has nothing to do with EA ... they had zero input in this ... They don't even know about it."

It is not known yet if all or some of those feature cuts will be implemented into the game later on with content patches or expansion packs. Mark Jacobs didn't comment on this.

You can probably imagine that many Warhammer fans are disappointed right now.

So this leaves us with the question: What do we think about this? There have been some concerns about the features that have been cut now lately. Most of the cities didn't look very complete up to now, and the vast amount of classes that Warhammer Online wanted to originally deliver is of course a question of balance and could have caused a problem. But is it the right step to do such severe cuts only months before the planned release?

Here's hoping that Mythic know what they are doing. It's all we can do for now.

What's the great fuss about? All these content cuts will be released post-launch anyway.

This is not for sure. I added a sentence to the news that is dealing with the post-launch phase.

That's like telling your children that they will get the Gameboy next year :)

One can only wonder, if these are the cuts that they are admitting, what are they not telling us?
I mean these cuts are major, removing the 4 major cities is like releasing WoW without Ironforge and Stormwind. And cutting classes is also not a really ideal solution, because it limits the options player have.

I would have been a much better idea to cut (postpone) Highlevel-Content that most players wouldn't be able to see for the first months anyway, but I'm sure they though about it and it just wasn't enough, so I guess they are really in trouble. I would prefer it if they would push the release date 6 month back instead of cutting content. Once the servers are live, every content development will take twice as long.

@Starkiller "I would have been a much better idea to cut (postpone) Highlevel-Content"

Perhaps there is no Highlevel-Content to cut away till today:-)

Could be yes, but then I would more and more doubt if I really wanted to play that game. MMOs are like bananas, they ripe after you buy them.

So maybe it would be a good idea to leave that game until it's not so green anymore. :-)

Not happy at all with these changes. I feel kind of cheated. Waited for that game for so long, and now they take away half of the fun features? Shame on you, Mythic.
