The real Gothic 3 successor? Piranha Byte's new project RPB

Germany —

Piranha Bytes, the German developer of the Gothic series, is off to a new start after having split with their publisher JoWood approximately a year ago. While JoWood has retained some rights for the Gothic franchise and is currently working together with developer Spellbound to release Gothic 4 at some point in the future, Piranha Bytes are now already busy working on a new project called RPB, which will be revealed on the E3 Media and Business Summit (July 15-17) this year. It is going to be a roleplaying game once more, and right now you can find a first FAQ section on the official website, which gives a first little insight into the game. Read some of the most interesting findings below.

Among other things we learn that the game is set on an island once more, with an active volcano in its centre that will play a central role. There will be different climate zones (we know that from Gothic 3) and the overall appearance of RPB is planned to be pretty dirty and gritty. There will be a stronger focus on dungeons than in the Gothic series and you will have the opportunity to interact with many NPC's on the mediterranean island; but no orcs, elves or dwarves. RPB has nothing to do with the mythology that Piranha Bytes created in Gothic.

But your character certainly has some similarities to Gothic's hero.

As the hero is new and has to first find his way around the island, his social status will be on the far lower end of the spectrum. He has few skills and knowledge and must learn to get around. The player's use of his acquired skills will be deeply influential to the course of the game.

Will your hero be nameless like in Gothic? That is not yet revealed. Concerning the weaponry there will be magic, shields and fighting with two weapons. Those weapons will have a rather realistic look and are not planned to be destructable at the current stage of development. We can't hope for a multiplayer part that allows playing the story cooperatively and better don't get your hopes up on a MAC or Linux version as well.

Piranha Bytes, that all sounds nice, but: Please be careful with the bugs this time around.

I liked Gothic 2 better than Gotic 3, but I will sure buy their next game.

I only played the very first Gothic up to now. And yes: I want to change that as soon as I can.

I am not sure if the bugs in Gothic 3 were the problem of Piranha Bytes, or the problem of their publisher at the time, Jowood, not giving them enough time.

I think they must have both been "guilty" in some way. With my last sentence in the article I didn't want to blame Piranha Bytes alone. When the readers click on the "bugs"-link they are redirected to your article in which you write about the accusations of Piranha Bytes against JoWood.

Just for the not enough time topic: wasn’t Gothic3 delayed several times?

If we take the state of the game in consideration (the boring desert, the horrible north, the lack of story and the absence of the Gothic-Feeling), we have to say some weeks of Bug fixing couldn’t save the game. The Project seems to be a little be to big for Piranha but in exchange for all the fun I had and still have with Gothic 1&2 I will give them a 2 try.

btw. Iam the only one with Problems with the Server-time? I miss one Hour...

Nope, Servertime is GMT, not GMT+1, which is perfectly ok since this is an international site. Maybe we'll get an profile-dependent offset in the far far future, but currently there is just one time to rule them all :-)

You can switch to GMT+1 in your Account-Setteings and untill yesterday there was no Problem with it...

:-O
How could I have missed that?
Well, I must have set it to +1 a long time ago, but according to the list +1 is 10am, so I now switched to +2 to get to the desired 11am.
(works)

We mentioned RPB once before, and I still think that it's the lamest working title in the history of gaming :-)

That could well be. RPB, that really doesn't sound like a game everybody has been waiting for. ;)

esp. since it stands for Role Playing Game from Piranha Bytes. No Joke, this comes directly from the website.
