Mega Man 9 (WiiWare): Back To The Roots

The latest issue of Nintendo Power revealed that Mega Man 9 is in development for Nintendo's download platform WiiWare. And according to series creator Keiji Inafune it won't be another spin-off with RPG elements as in so many other recent games of the franchise (like the Mega Man Battle Network series, for example) but a straight classic sidescroller. It will even feature the old 8-bit NES graphics. Not only this, but the difficulty level will also be quite on par with the old titles like Mega Man 2. A high difficuly level is typical for Mega Man games and Mega Man 2 is therefore also known to be quite hard to master. It's also still considered to be the best game in the series ever.

Mega Man was always famous for the boss battles, and of course those will return as well.

Bosses for the new sequel include Magma Man, Galaxy Man, Jewel Man, Concrete Man, Hornet Man, Plug Man, Tornado Man, and Splash Woman [...]. As usual, Mega Man will gain new powers from his vanquished foes (for instance, beating Galaxy Man gives you "black-hole bombs").

We can't give you any concrete information concerning a release date yet. But if you would like to warm up for the new title, you could for example download the NES titles Mega Man and Mega Man 2 with the Virtual Console. Each of those will cost you 500 Wii points. Mega Man 9 will most probably cost you a bit more than that when it is finally released, but taking into consideration that games on WiiWare are meant to be budget titles after all, the newest title in the Mega Man series should be affordable as well.

Hi Knurrunkulus, thanks for this interesting news. I'm in opposition to your claim that the "recent games" in the Megaman franchise are an "experiment", though: The Megaman Battle Network games are an established, well-working series -- an experiment is something which is yet unproven. :-)

Yes, you are right with that. "Experiment" really wasn't the best word. I changed it into "spin-off" now. Although I have to admit I didn't know that the Mega Man Battle Network series is apparently running that well. I never got round to playing one of those games.
