Diablo 3 Officially Announced!

Switzerland —

And the heavens shall tremble ... After much wild guessing and hoping on various websites (including this extra long GamersGlobal news), Blizzard Entertainment has officially announced Diablo 3 at the WorldWide Invitational 2008. With a cinematic trailer and a quite long gameplay movie, they confirmed that the Hack'n'Slay action will be back. When? Heaven knows - no official release date has been announced yet.

Several trailers can be watched on the new Diablo 3 website. We think they look promising.

The game is set 20 years after the events in Diablo 2. When Deckard Cain returns to the old cathedral in Tristram, a comet crashes down on exactly the same spot where Diablo entered the world in the first installment of the franchise. Now, the heroes of Sanctuarios (the name of the game world, in which the events from Diablo 2 are since long forgotten) have to join forces to defend humankind against the creatures of hell once more.

Some more facts for you:

  1. Diablo 3 is a classic Hack'n'Slay
  2. Diablo 3 will be rendered in 3D
  3. There will be a co-op mode again.
  4. 2 classes are already confirmed: Barbarian & Witch Doctor. The Witch Doctor can summon creatures and seems to resemble the Necromancer class
  5. Deckard Cain is back!

So, have a look at the trailers or screenshots and tell us what you think. Will Diablo 3 come close to the "good ol' feeling" of its predecessors? Is the new 3D engine helpful to the game? And, most important: Did you just wet your pants in anticipation like we did?

D3 will rock the boat. Period. Whatever gaming company plans to release a game end of 2009 or end of 2010 should hurry to plan on releasing their game before D3. I believe even WOW will see a significant dent in subscriptions when this game is released. Basically, it will be like WOW without the hassle.

D3 will rock the boat if they really introduce something new to the franchise. Otherwise it'd just be another clone of a clone (Diablo II) of a clone (Diablo I).

Wow...seriously Wow, the gameplay-video just looked awesome. And they didn't try to reinvent the franchise, the didn't try to put more strategy in there, or reduced the loot to amounts that would make sense in a real world, they just honed this diamond to perfection.

I must say, I'm honestly impressed and as giddy as an eight year old, this looks exactly like the game I was hoping for, so I have to disagree with Leonard on this, if another company tries this, it's called a clone and there were hundreds who tried and only a handful who succeeded, but if Blizzard tries this, it's called a worthy successor.

I'm completely with you on this one. I didn't see the whole gameplay video yet, because my internet connection is incredibly slow right now but what I already saw just looked outright awesome. And the first cinematic trailer for the game is simply near perfection.
