As of today you can buy the new ATI Radeon HD 4850 at your local German retailer. The price is, as expected, quite reasonable - about 160 €. And what about the performance?
ComputerBase, a German website about hardware, tested it a few days ago. The results are quite impressive. The performance is about the same as the 3850 X2, but still above the 8800 by NVIDIA. And these cards cost a lot more. Computerbase concluded about the whole 4800 series:
With the Radeon HD 4800 Series, ATI finally managed not just to compete with the GF9000-Series, even beat them in performance in certain settings.
The faster 4870 should not have any problems with the GeForce 9800 GTX, even leaves the 3870 X2 behind. We'll see how it competes with the new GT200 by NVIDIA.
There are no tests yet about heat emission or fan noise. Thus, interested people should wait a few days for these results to come. But it really looks like ATI could get on top now ...

Well, according to the benchmarks I saw in the linked article, it looks like the 4850 is directly competing with the 8800GT which currently costs about 169€. The somewhat similar 8800GTX went out of production some time ago.
The 9800GTX which was released earlier this year is still faster, so it's clear to me that the 4850 is targeted for a mid-ranged market. And I highly doubt that the soon-to-come 4870 will be that much faster that it can compete with the much faster Geforce 280.
I guess it will have 20-25 % more power, but will cost less than 200 Euros.
A crossfire with 2 4870ies would be interesting to check. But we will see that.

It was more a reply to the quoted comment from ATI which suggested that the new card could even beat the GTX280.
(Nvidia switched numbers and letters, so it's now GTX280 and not 280GTX)
Maybe I didn't translate it well, maybe they mean in CF mode
