Cryptic Studios To Announce Star Trek Online?

Germany —

Cryptic Studios, developers of the MMO's City of Heroes and City of Villains, put a countdown timer in the games section on their website very recently, which will end on July 27th. In the background of the countdown you can see a picture that clearly has to do something with a science-fiction setting (asteroid-rain and planets can be seen). And this picture leads to speculations in the "Star Trek Online" fan-base now.

A quick jump back in time: Star Trek Online was a MMO under development by Perpetual Entertainment, but in January this year they announced that the game had been cancelled. They closed down their studio one month later.

Before that they stated that the rights for Star Trek Online had been passed to another development team in the bay area, and since then Cryptic Studios have been one of the fan favourites. The same fan favourites that have now realised that the background picture in the recent countdown very strongly resembles early artworks from Perpetual Entertainment, as can be seen here. And without doubt the resemblance is really quite strinking.

It would appear that we now have some concrete confirmation that Crytic is developing STO!

The offical web presence of Star Trek Online doesn't give us any new hints; back in March we already reported about the caption Coming soon that can still be found there.

It's highly likely that soon means July 27th. We will find out for sure on that very date, this interestingly being the last day of the Comic Con in San Diego. Let's put it as subtle as we can:

It wouldn't be the worst day to announce a Star Trek MMO, would it?

Oh yeah, I would so love an mmo in the Star Trek Universe, I can't understand why this wasn't done 5-10 years ago, when the SciFi-Genre were in it's prime on TV.

I hope Cryptic get better funding then Perpetual, so that they can pull this off, Star Trek was never anywhere near low-budget. By the way, the picture is awesome.

I've never been anywhere near to being a Star Trek fan, but I can understand why many people would really love to see a MMO with this topic. And I think that Cryptic would be the right studio to pull this off. Although their first MMO's were nowhere near being perfect, they are still running with a solid player base and they keep contiunally supporting the game with content updates. So if they go for Star Trek Online (and as I said in the news: I personally think that we ARE already talking facts here instead of just speculating) I would assume that they perfectly well know what is expected of them; so they wouldn't try to go for it with a budget that's too low.

And with their experience (although in a completely different genre of MMO's) they could well be successful.

[edit] I'd say it wasn't done 5-10 years ago because sci-fi might have been a prime genre; but MMO's were far from being prime.
