StarCraft 2's non-linear Campaign

Germany —

At GC in Leipzig, some 20 gamers at a time (for 10 minutes each) could play StarCraft 2 in Hall 2 of the "consumer part" of the hybrid show. Being privileged journalists, we got an extra demonstration by Samwise Didier, Senior Art Director at Blizzard, in the "business part". There will not only be the high-qualtity animation cutscenes Blizzard is famous for, but also multiple-choice conversations between missions (often aboard Starship Hyperion). Also, for the first time we could see that StarCraft 2 will feature a non-linear mission structure in solo mode: From the Starship mainscreen, you can switch to a galactic map where various planets (6 in our demonstration version, but that number will definitely increase). You can zoom in on the planets to get more information on their history and the mission attached to it -- and select which one to conquer next. Because planets vary in difficulty, and also the rewards are different. You might get the support of a minor faction, for example, or just earn exra credits. With this system, it's up to the player how he wants to proceed in the campaign, and how hard it will be. A typical mission could be: "The Kel-Morian Mining Corporation is offering payment for harvesting minerals on the volcanic planet of Redstone" -- where 2.000 minerals would add 30 million credits to your purse and an additional 1.000 another 15 million (but these still are placeholder values). On other planets, you might search for artifacts or free a prisoner. Samwise Didier told us that "we are still looking into how many planets the player can choose from at a given time. Maybe from all of them, but then, some will obviously be too hard in the beginning of the campaign."
