Update: Sporepedia online + System requirementsUpdate: Sporepedia online + System requirements

Sporepedia, the encyclopedia for all creatures (and more) in upcoming Spore is now online. You can already see about 200 user created creatures. What? How can there be content in Sporepedia when the game isn't due until September 5th in Europe and September 7th in North America (for PC and Mac as well as, in slightly different and far less complex versions, for Wii and DS) ? That's why: Developer Maxis has released the Spore Creature Creator. Maxis has also released the system requirements. Here is a glimpse at the reqs for Windows XP:
Update: Filefront.com and DemoNews.de already provide it for download, so I assume it's virus free and safe to download.

Europe 2 days before North America !
Ha! Finally some justice! :D
True, but for a (probably) higher price. I'd rather wait two more days and pay less money.
Yeah, that's probably true :/
Thanks for this good news, Phlexonance. I'm very much looking forward to the game.
I added the picture, as well as two more links. And I put some more information about the Wii and DS version into the text, as well as changing the "Creature Editor" into its proper name "Spore Creature Creator".
Thanks. I'm pleased with your changes =)
Cool news. But 5 AM? Man... :)
someone got up early ;)
nice news btw. seems like i have to preorder something...
Crazy early indeed, but keep in mind that server time is GMT, most of us life in a GMT+1 timezone. But 6am would still be quite early.
Well, the early bird catches the worm ;)
6GB for a simple creature editor, who would have thought :-)
And why is that thing called Sporepedia? That implies that it would be some kind of lexicon, but currently it's just a creature-gallery.
6 GB lol :D. A pity that they want to have money for an editor, that is (hopefully) already included in the final game. They should have offered the editor for free :/
Sporepedia will be more than just a Creature Gallery. In this early stage (game not released) it just hasn't enough content i guess.
They would probably offered the editor for free if they though they needed to hype the game a little more, but they probably thought that the hype is so big, that they can start cashing in on it already.
But count me out, I won't pay for a beta, or a demo and definitly not for an editor. The sole purpose of this is to have some creatures to populate the universe at release.
laZee, if you click on the "Spore Creature Creator"-link in the news article you will find an old article from GamersGlobal there where the Creature Creator is explained in further detail. It will not only allow you to create your creatures without any restrictions when you buy the full version (all body parts of the full version of "Spore" are made available for you), but the feature "pollinated content" will also populate the world with them when the game finally launches. So your creatures will already be in there, while others just start playing.
So it's basically a bit like pre-ordering an MMO, where you also have to pay money for. Of course: it IS only one aspect of the full game, but it's probably the most important one. The one that many people want to play the product for.
And this is why I am extremely tempted to buy the "Creature Creator".
If people would pay, make them pay :)
i think its a fair deal, you can download a free editor with abou 25 % content and if you are really into being creative and like that thing the 10 bugs won't mean anything to you, still i have my doubts about the sys recs.
When i tried mass effect my sys met all the recs but still it wasn't playable on lowes level of detail and resolution, seems as if they are putting out plain lies to make some money
Maxis' games never had really high system reqs.
I agree, but I would never pay for that editor. What EA should do is offer a rebate of the exact price the editor cost when you buy the finished game.
Yes, that's a good idea.
I'll only download the trial editor. The reduced content will also keep me from spoiling the game to myself =)
I would get 3dmark06 and compare the results online with other users with the same system. If you are really below the highest score (~50%) , you should check what's wrong (probably too much crap windows has to handle).
I think one of the biggest problems is just that regardless of what the sys-reqs say, what "playable" actually means isn't defined.
