Sid Meier's Colonization: A Classic Is Being RebornSid Meier's Colonization: A Classic Is Being Reborn
Last updated on June 10, 2008 - 19:13.
Sid Meier's Colonization, a turn-based strategy game classic from 1994 focussing on the early European colonization of the New World (spanning from 1492 to 1850) will be reimagined and released in autumn this year, as publisher TakeTwo announced. The title of the remake is both fitting and confusing, because it will be shipped as Civilization IV: Colonization. This is fitting, because Colonization always had similiarities to the other Sid Meier classic Civilization. And it is confusing, because although the title suggests that it will be another add-on in the line of Civilization IV: Warlords and Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword, this is actually not the case. Neither Civilization IV nor one of its add-ons will be required to play Civilization IV: Colonization. It will be a stand-alone product. While the gameplay obviously won't change that much (you will still be leading one of four european nations participating in the race to take over the New World), it was announced that the graphics as well as the diplomacy will be all-new and improved. Well, it shouldn't be too hard to improve the graphics from how they looked like over a decade ago; the improvement therefore probably means that they will be on quite the same level as in Civ IV. The game is also going to feature a new interface and a modding toolset. The latest game Sid Meier was working on is Civilization Revolution, which will be coming out in Europe for PS3 and XBox 360 this month and looks quite promising. And Sid, you know what's still missing? A remake of Alpha Centauri. Oh come on. Just do it.

Really cool. But the screenshot really reminds me of Civ 4. I'd rather like to have an addon, it would be cheaper :)
But I'm looking forward to that, thx for the news!
Interesting, the graphics reminded me of Civilization: Revolution, which I played just the day before yesterday.
The Demo was nice by the way.
Wow 1994, thats 14 years, I still had a 486 at that time. But I liked the game, not that different from Anno 1602 come to think of it...
Oh my, I hold fond memories of Colonization. The intro music alone was wonderful at that time. Not sure if I can still whistle it. That game is worth a look for me.
welcome to the party that is GamersGlobal :-)
Colonization was released when I was still a console gamer, so I never played it. But I was magically dragged towards Sid Meier games in the last few months, so probably I will give the remake of Colonization a try as well.
I liked Colonization (and even played the obscure Windows-Version on a subnotebook a couple of years ago), but one thing which is flawed is the "hitpoint" system, where horses effectively act as "armor" (a scout or a cavalry soldier will lose his horse when he loses a battle, instead of being captured). This works fine for infantry soldiers (a soldier that loses will become a civilian before he's captured), but because horses are so much cheaper (you can breed them in your towns quite easily), while weapons are expensive throughout the game, the system is flawed: The computer isn't using the "horse as armor" tactic very well, while the player does, once he notices it. But with a constant supply of horses, that will be shot down and resupplied, and still having the fallback of the soldier, who again needs to lose a battle (becoming a civilian) and another battle (being finally captured), the cavalry is more effective than it should be (it already has a better attack value and higher speed).
Hey, cool new fansite up at: http://www.hookedoncolonization.com
