New Feature: Votes changedNew Feature: Votes changed
Last updated on May 21, 2008 - 17:49.
It took Jan 17 minutes to change the following, but I think it's a very worthwhile change: We had the problem of many negative votes for top news where we could see no reason at all for that, see this earlier posting. Then, we changed the voting system so that only registered users could vote. Frankly, we were not pleased with the results because the ratio of registered users to "casual visitors" is still very small, most people preferring to read, not to participate. But clicking on a vote button is the first small step towards participation, which we really like to offer. What we've done now is allowing anonymous voting (with the usual IP lock) again, but at the same time, allow only positive votes. So from now on, the votes are more a recommendation ("read this, it's worthwhile") than a "thumb up or down". If you do not like a news, simply don't click the vote button. It's as easy as that.

I like the change, because, if you check the newer articles like this one, many votes were made today by "players", so, suddenly, the writers have positive feedback and motivation again.
But there were negative votes by players also o0
maybe if you cancel your positive vote?
I like the change, because it was my idea. =)
hmm, if you look at this article you will notice a lot of negative votes, I thought we had turned that off? Can't really explain that, I just logged of to see if maybe unregistered users still had a negative button, but that wasn't the case, any ideas?
Maybe some browser cache anomality? *shrug*
I don't know :(
Exactly, the "-" is not really turned off, but only hidden. Once user's caches have reloaded, the problem will be gone.
I'm not really convincent, this news alone was hit (at time of writting) with 28 negative votes, but the button was removed weeks ago, can this really be a cache problem?
I know people who have their Desktop-PC running for months without a restart, not to mention the TempFiles of their browser...
So I basically just need to view the site without a css file, or edit the site's css file myself and use a user-css file (which any browser can do) and I can make negative votes?
Doesn't seem like a solution to me.
This should be stopped at the server's side.
What happened to the paradigm: "Never trust a client" ?
Because they won't dread any effort to give us a "-" ?
If someone goes to those lengths, the article in question must be truly horrible... ;)
couldn't find a single negative vote after 6am on the 23rd, so I hope it stopped.
There had been a little bug still, which was fixed by Jan on the 23rd. It seems to work now :-)
